2021 Things: 3 Ways to Gear Up Your Child for The New Academic Year
The new year has finally begun! With the new year, comes new things and new beginnings. We are sure most people have had an arduous and maybe even tumultuous 2020 and have been looking forward to 2021 for the longest time – our children included.
The global pandemic has disrupted our children’s education and their days in school in the past year. Classes were delivered online, the school semester was cut short, holidays were shifted and most importantly – significantly less interaction with their schoolmates since recess time did not allow for soccer matches or other sports games.
However, as 2021 begins, we also begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel as Singapore’s government announced the availability of the Covid-19 vaccine and moving on to Phase 3 as a nation. With normalcy soon approaching, how can we as parents get our children hyped up for the new academic year?
1. Create Conversations About the New Academic Year
Are any of your children about to take a national exam in 2021? Be it PSLE, GCE O’ or N’ Levels, find out which subjects they are struggling with and set reasonable milestones for them to achieve throughout the year. If they don’t seem too excited for school, find out if they are struggling with any school-related anxiety. Do they have a school bully they are afraid of? Is there a teacher they feel is picking on them? These could be possible reasons for your child to dread going back to school and it is always good to find out early and nip them in the bud as soon as possible before it affects their grades or their morale.
2. New Year, New School Supplies
It’s comes as no surprise that most children get a brand new set of school uniform before the new academic year begins and with it a new schoolbag, pencil case and maybe new school shoes. It might even be a customary practice and the norm in your family to start the year off with brand new items. Why not take this chance to educate your children about gratitude and teach them how to appreciate and take care of the new items that were purchased for them? Allow them to understand their privilege and that some of their peers’ might not be able to enjoy such luxuries.
You can also take the opportunity to introduce ergonomic products to your child by choosing an ergonomic school bag that will provide them with sufficient back support and protect their spines daily.
3. Create a Designated Study Station at Home
If your kid doesn’t already have a dedicated study table in 2020, what are you waiting for? Having a designated space or study table for studying and revision will allow your child to stay focused for a longer period of time and maximise productivity during their already short attention span. It is also a good habit to cultivate in the new year as having a special zone to do school work will make it clear that study time cannot be playtime.
Ergonomic study desks and chairs usually comes in a set and here at Kidchamp, we have the Kidchamp Magicube bundle which includes an ergonomic kids study chair and desk. It is of utmost importance that you choose to purchase ergonomic furniture for your child’s study station as ergonomic products are designed to promote comfort and efficiency while protecting your child’s spinal health.
Let’s Focus on What’s Important
2020 has allowed us to appreciate family time and health more and this is a lesson we should all keep in mind as we start 2021 to remind ourselves that results are not the only thing that matters. Let’s teach our children to enjoy learning in school and raise them as inquisitive kids who marvel at the world’s beauty.
